The People’s Executor: AI, Wills, And The End Of Estate Planning Gatekeeping

The People’s Executor: AI, Wills, And The End Of Estate Planning Gatekeeping

April 29, 2026

I just finished filing my 2026 taxes with AI. Now I’m doing the exact same thing with my will.Same workflow. Same quiet revolution. Same feeling of finally being in control of something that used to feel intimidating and expensive.

This is what I mean when I talk about “bubbles.”Imagine a simple dashboard called Secretary Suite. You log in, and there it is: clean, focused workspaces—one bubble for taxes, one for your will, one for LLC compliance, one for medical directives, whatever life throws at you.

Each bubble is pre-loaded with the right forms, the right state rules, the right step-by-step guidance. No more hunting through government websites. No more paying a lawyer hundreds of dollars an hour just to translate plain English into legal paperwork. You open the bubble, feed it your documents, and the AI does what it does best: it makes the process visible, organized, and doable. That’s not science fiction. That’s the near future I’m already living in.

For my will, I started with the official packet from the State of Maryland. It lays out every requirement, every parameter, every “what if” scenario you’re supposed to consider. In the old world, that packet would have sat on my desk for months while I tried to figure out where to begin. Instead, I handed the whole thing to my AI and said: here’s my situation, here’s what I own, here’s who I care about, here’s how I want things handled. It asked smart clarifying questions, told me exactly which additional documents or schedules I might need, and helped me build the same clean Google Drive structure I used for taxes—one folder for the will itself, one for supporting letters, one for asset lists, one for each beneficiary’s details.

Then we started filling in the blanks. Line by line. Decision by decision. I could stop the thread at any moment, walk away, come back days later, and the AI picked up exactly where we left off. No lost context. No “where was I?” panic. The process never felt overwhelming because the AI turned it into a clear, visual, step-by-step map. That’s the part most people miss about AI. The biggest barrier to getting important things done—taxes, wills, estate plans, you name it—isn’t the complexity of the rules. It’s that the average person can’t visualize the entire process from start to finish. They get stuck in the fog. AI burns off the fog. It organizes everything, explains every step in plain language, and keeps you oriented no matter how many times life interrupts.

Why would I ever pay a lawyer thousands of dollars for basic estate planning again? For the vast majority of regular people—those who aren’t ultra-wealthy with tangled trusts and offshore accounts—this is already better, faster, cheaper, and more accurate than the traditional route. The AI doesn’t replace my judgment; it amplifies it. I stay in the driver’s seat. I make every final call. But the cognitive load, the research, the endless cross-checking, the fear of missing something important—all of that disappears.

And here’s the part that actually matters most to me:I want to leave behind an orderly, understandable set of affairs for whoever has to serve as executor someday. No giant mess. No confused family members digging through scattered papers trying to figure out what I meant. No unnecessary stress or legal fees at the worst possible time. AI is letting me build that clean handoff right now, while I’m still here and still thinking clearly.

This is the deeper promise of these tools when we use them right. They don’t just help you get through tax season or knock out a will. They let regular people design a smoother, more dignified exit from life itself. They turn what used to be a source of anxiety and expense into one more area where you stay in control.

The gatekeepers in estate planning—lawyers, accountants, “professional” will services—have had their monopoly for a long time. AI is distributing that expertise to anyone willing to stay organized and ask good questions. Just like it did for publishing. Just like it’s doing for taxes. Just like it will soon do across every corner of personal and small-business life.

Of course there will be sloppy work done with AI. There always has been sloppy work done by humans. The real divide won’t be “AI wills” versus “lawyer wills.” The real divide will be between people who approach life’s serious responsibilities with care and those who don’t. The tool simply makes careful people more powerful.

Secretary Suite is coming—bubbles for every major life admin task, ready when you are, waiting to turn confusion into clarity. Until then, the same principle already works today in plain ChatGPT threads and well-organized Google Drive folders.I waited decades for AI to reach this level of usefulness. Now that it’s here, I’m using it to get my entire house in order—one bubble, one process, one clean decision at a time.

The climb from here is still upward. And it is going to be more empowering, more liberating, and more quietly revolutionary than anything humanity has ever seen.I’m grateful every single day that I lived long enough to use it.
