The People’s Accountant: AI, Taxes, And The Collapse Of Expensive Gatekeeping

The People’s Accountant: AI, Taxes, And The Collapse Of Expensive Gatekeeping

April 29, 2026

Taxes are one of those adult realities that have always felt deliberately complicated.

For most people with even a moderately complex situation—side income, rental property, multiple states, or especially an LLC or two—the process quickly becomes a thicket of forms, deadlines, obscure rules, and the lingering fear that one wrong number will trigger an audit or a penalty. For decades the default answer was simple: pay a professional. Hand over your documents, write a check, and hope for the best.

That default is quietly disappearing.

I just filed my 2026 taxes using AI. Not as a gimmick. Not as a replacement for my own judgment. But as the most patient, knowledgeable, and available tax specialist I have ever worked with. And it was straightforward. Organized. Actually manageable.

This is what real empowerment looks like.
I started by giving the large language model every form I had. Then I explained my personal situation and the details of my LLCs in plain English. The model did not guess. It asked clarifying questions. It told me exactly which additional documents I needed: specific state returns by certain deadlines, particular K-1 statements, supporting schedules that most people only discover after the fact.

Following its guidance, I opened Google Drive and built a clean folder structure. One folder for each state. One master folder for federal documents. Separate folders for every K-1 and supporting statement. Everything had its place before I ever started entering numbers.

From there the rest was guided execution. The AI walked me line by line through every form. “Take this number from Box 3 of that K-1 and enter it here.” “Apply this calculation for your LLC deduction.” “Here is why this credit qualifies in your exact situation.” I stayed in full control. I verified every entry. But the cognitive burden—the memorization of rules, the cross-checking of obscure regulations, the anxiety of missing something—was lifted.

Why would I ever pay a tax consultant for routine work again?

For the vast majority of people whose returns are complicated but not exotic, the old model of expensive professional help is rapidly becoming optional. A modern large language model combined with basic upfront organization turns what used to feel overwhelming into something almost routine.

This is not about avoiding responsibility. It is about meeting your responsibilities more effectively. The deeper truth is even more exciting. Today’s frontier AI models function like having a doctorate-level specialist in tax law, accounting, business structures, and state regulations on call twenty-four hours a day. They explain concepts more clearly than most humans. They never get tired. They never forget a detail. They synthesize across domains instantly. And they are available the moment you need them.

I waited decades for this technology to mature. Now that it is here I am using it not only for taxes but to bring greater order to every part of my financial life. As life gets more intricate—with more income streams, more ventures, more moving pieces—I will simply stay organized earlier in the year. The process will remain relatively easy because the expertise is now democratized.

And there is an even quieter, more meaningful benefit. Someday, when the time comes, I want to leave behind an orderly set of affairs for whoever has to serve as executor of my estate. No giant mess of scattered documents. No confusion about what belongs where. No unnecessary stress for the people I care about. AI is helping me make that clean transition possible.

This is the quiet promise of AI used properly. It does not have to be flashy. Sometimes its greatest value appears in the everyday tasks that once drained time, money, and peace of mind. Taxes. Bookkeeping. Personal finance. Small-business compliance. Estate organization. AI collapses the unnecessary friction and hands the leverage back to the individual.

Of course there will be people who use these tools carelessly. There will be sloppy returns and corner-cutting. But that has always been true. The real divide in the future will not be between “AI-assisted taxes” and “human taxes.” The real divide will be between careless work and serious work. A responsible person using AI remains responsible. A careless person using AI remains careless. The tool simply amplifies what is already there.

The gatekeepers—whether tax consultants, accounting firms, or any other credentialed intermediaries—have had their monopoly on expertise for a long time. AI is steadily distributing that expertise to anyone willing to stay organized and ask good questions. It does not eliminate the need for human judgment. It makes that judgment far more powerful.

Publishing has its people’s press. Lawmaking can have its engine of transparency. And personal finance now has its people’s accountant.

This is civilization-level empowerment in its most practical form.

I am more excited than ever. The climb from here is genuinely upward, and it is going to be unlike anything humanity has ever seen. Regular people quietly becoming more capable, more organized, and more in control of their own lives—one tax return, one Google Drive folder, one clear-eyed decision at a time.

I am grateful every single day that I lived long enough to see it.
